Sports therapy and clinical massage

Sports therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the rehabilitation and prevention of musculo-skeletal injury. The aim of treatment is to help the patient return to optimum levels of everyday, occupational or sports specific function, regardless of age and ability. This may include back or joint pain, or muscular issues.

Sports Therapy treatment will often include:

  • - Assessment and Diagnosis of the problem
  • - A personalised treatment plan
  • - Sports massage (including specialised techniques)
  • - Joint mobilisation
  • - Kinesiology taping
  • -Stretching and strengthening
  • -Electrical modalities (ultrasound, muscle stimulation)
  • - Postural correction
  • - Exercise prescription

Sports, Deep Tissue and Clinical Massage were developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. However, contrary to what the name suggests, you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from this kind of massage. Sports snd clinical massage emphasises prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons and can be beneficial for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. In sports and clinical massage, the therapist will generally concentrate on a specific problem area that you present, usually associated with some sort of sport or repetitive everyday activity, i.e. tight shoulders after sitting at a computer for long periods.

A variety of the following sport and clinical massage techniques may be used to achieve the desired goal:

  • - Myofascial Release - slow, gentle pressure used to break down restrictions within superficial fascia.
  • - Deep Tissue Massage - to alleviate muscle tension by releasing restrictions within deeper fascia.
  • - Trigger point therapy - to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles), and eliminate referred pain.
  • - Soft Tissue Release - to stretch tight muscles and increase range of motion.
  • - Muscle Energy Techniques - to enable further stretch of fibres following resisted muscle contraction.
  • - Corrective Frictions - to break down residual scar tissue within a tendon and correct the alignment of healed tissue.
What Happens during a Sports Deep Tissue and clinical Massage?

The session begins with a full consultation and postural assessment of the body, to determine any issues which may be contributing to the muscle pain or tightness. A variety of any of the above clinical massage techniques may then be applied to achieve the desired goal.
